Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Fall Home Maintenance ChecklistAs the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop, it’s time to begin readying your home for the coming Fall and Winter months. A quick audit and some home organization can help determine what needs your attention. Here are a few things to look for as we move into fall.

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Gutters: Clean your gutters of any debris to allow water to flow through smoothly. Install leaf guards and continue to clear out your gutters during the next few months to prevent clogs and build up.

Chimney: Before your first roaring fire of the season, call a licensed chimney sweep to inspect and clean your chimney. This should be done on a yearly basis to ensure all components are working properly and to rid the chimney of any creosote and soot accumulation.

Firewood: Stock up on firewood. If you have some from last year, check to see if it has been compromised by a pest infestation or moisture and mold.

Insulate: Weather strip all windows and doors and caulk any cracks or openings. This will trap any escaping air, keeping the heat inside where it belongs, as well as protect against water seeping in and freezing, which could later cause cracks or mold.

Plumbing: Inspect your pipes and shut off any outdoor water valves to avoid the pipes freezing and bursting in the colder months.

Heating: Have your heating system checked by a professional. Regular maintenance can increase both efficiency and longevity.

Home Organization: Clean and store anything that you won’t be using regularly in the cooler months. Outdoor examples include gardening tools and pool accessories, while indoors it can mean switching from your summer to winter wardrobe. House organization will streamline your life across the board, so don’t hesitate to tuck away items that will no longer hold daily importance.
